Design Abundance and Laboratory Scarcity: The Changing Production Function of AI Drug Discovery
AI & Financial Systems →Abstract
AI expands candidate drug design faster than validation capacity. I develop a bottleneck-relocation framework in which experimental, manufacturing, and clinical capabilities become scarce complements to computational search. An outcome-blind matched comparison finds that 10 of 14 AI-linked assets, versus 27 of 67 contemporaneous controls, entered Phase II or later; the matched gap is 31.4 percentage points. The evidence shows that AI is already changing pharmaceutical innovation by moving advantage toward organizations controlling experimental feedback and execution.
